Writing the world, one word at a time.
Hello! Welcome! It is wonderful to see you! While some editors combine developmental and content editing as a single service, we consider them separate entities at the Write Place. Developmental and content editing are separate steps in the editing process and each deserve their own attention. We edit everything fiction, as well as some non-fiction and poetry.
Developmental editing explores the overall concept and structure of the story. This step in the editing process looks at the skeleton of your story, such as—basic plotting and story arcs, how the story progresses (develops) over the course of your manuscript, overall structure, and basic character development.
Content editing occurs after the developmental edit. Content edits conduct a deeper dive into structure, pacing, characterization, chapter transitions, and general readability. This includes intense exploration of characterization, plots, narrative voice, language, etc. Where developmental edits are the skeleton, content edits are the flesh and muscle and sinew that connects all the parts.
You can also combine the developmental and content edits and get them all in one package! This would help you fully flesh out your manuscript and prepare for next steps in your publication journey, however you may define what that is.

Anna F. Marasco has been inventing stories and living in her imagination for as long as she can remember. She is a licensed clinical social worker, specializing in case conceptualization and trauma. She also holds a Master's of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Sierra Nevada University. She also is an avid writer, with numerous published poems and short stories. Her novels, one of which was her master's thesis, have received praise and accolades from faculty, including Pulitzer Prize-nominated poets and authors. She believes that every writer's story is important and strives hard to maintain the author's vision and voice throughout the editing process. Anna believes in maintaining the integrity of every piece of work that comes across her desk.
French poet Guillaume de Salluste Du Bartas, once described the eyes as “these lovely lamps, these windows of the soul.” I respectfully disagree. French poet Guillaume de Salluste Du Bartas, once described the eyes as “these lovely lamps, these windows of the soul.” I respectfully disagree. Eyes are not windows of the soul, but, rather, stories are. Stories require vulnerability. They require us to bleed a part of our essence onto a page and submit these pieces of ourselves, these precious creations, to complete strangers. The literary world can be scary, cold, and disheartening. Editing does not have to be. My belief is that editing, good editing, will leave you motivated for and excited about your work, thirsty for more creativity. My approach is to embrace your vision and voice as the author of the manuscript by maintaining the integrity of your work. I like to utilize the editing experience as an individualized exploration into your own creative process.
I am excited to collaborate with you and to read your stories.
Always keep writing,
Anna
